At SkinCeuticals, science is not just a marketing claim—it is the foundation of everything we do. Our commitment to rigorous research, clinical validation, and evidence-based formulation has made us a leader in advanced skincare for over two decades.
SkinCeuticals was founded on the principle that effective skincare must be grounded in science. We do not make claims without proof. Every product we develop is backed by rigorous research, clinical testing, and measurable results. This commitment to evidence-based skincare has earned us the trust of dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and skincare professionals worldwide.
Our scientific approach begins with understanding the biology of skin—how it functions, how it ages, and how it responds to environmental factors. This fundamental knowledge guides our research into new ingredients, formulation techniques, and treatment approaches. We invest heavily in basic research because we believe that deep understanding leads to better products.
We also recognize that laboratory research must be validated in real-world conditions. That is why we conduct extensive clinical studies to test our products on human subjects under controlled conditions. These studies provide objective evidence of efficacy that allows us to make truthful claims and helps professionals and consumers make informed decisions.
Our commitment to science extends to transparency. We publish our research in peer-reviewed journals, present at international conferences, and openly share our findings with the scientific community. This openness reflects our confidence in our work and our belief that advancing skincare science benefits everyone.
SkinCeuticals' scientific foundation was established through groundbreaking research conducted at Duke University by our founder, Dr. Sheldon Pinnell. His work on antioxidant formulation revolutionized the skincare industry and established new standards for topical vitamin C delivery.
Before Dr. Pinnell's research, the skincare industry struggled to create effective vitamin C products. The vitamin is inherently unstable and does not easily penetrate the skin barrier. Through systematic investigation, Dr. Pinnell discovered the specific parameters required for effective topical vitamin C delivery.
His research established that ascorbic acid must be formulated at a pH below 3.5 and at a concentration between 10-20% for optimal penetration and efficacy. These parameters, protected by the Duke Antioxidant Patent, form the basis of our antioxidant serums and have been widely adopted across the industry.
Subsequent research by Dr. Pinnell and his colleagues led to the discovery of synergistic antioxidant combinations. The combination of vitamin C with vitamin E and ferulic acid was found to provide significantly greater protection than any single antioxidant alone, leading to the development of our legendary C E Ferulic serum.
Over the years, SkinCeuticals research has produced numerous discoveries that have advanced the field of skincare science. These discoveries inform our product development and establish new paradigms for effective skincare.
Our research demonstrated that combinations of antioxidants can provide greater protection than single antioxidants alone. The combination of vitamins C and E doubles the protection against UV-induced damage, while adding ferulic acid to this combination increases protection to eight times the skin's natural defense. This discovery of antioxidant synergy led to the development of our signature antioxidant formulations.
We continue to explore antioxidant combinations, investigating how different molecules work together to protect skin from environmental damage. This research has produced a range of antioxidant products tailored to different skin types and concerns.
Effective skincare requires more than just good ingredients—it requires proper formulation. Our research has established optimal parameters for delivering various active ingredients to the skin, including pH levels, concentrations, and vehicle systems. These parameters ensure that active ingredients reach their targets in the skin and produce their intended effects.
We invest considerable resources in formulation science, developing proprietary delivery systems that enhance ingredient stability and penetration. This expertise in formulation is a key differentiator for SkinCeuticals products.
Our research has expanded understanding of environmental threats to skin health beyond UV radiation. We have studied the effects of infrared radiation, visible light, pollution, and other environmental factors on skin aging. This research informs our comprehensive approach to environmental protection.
Our products are designed to protect against the full spectrum of environmental aggressors, not just UV rays. This holistic approach to protection reflects our understanding that skin faces multiple challenges in the modern environment.

Clinical research is essential to validating product efficacy. We conduct extensive clinical studies to demonstrate that our products deliver the results we promise. These studies are designed and conducted according to the highest scientific standards.
Our clinical studies employ rigorous methodologies including randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled designs when appropriate. We use objective instrumentation to measure outcomes, reducing bias and ensuring reliable results. Studies are conducted by qualified researchers under proper oversight.
We measure a wide range of endpoints in our clinical studies, including visible signs of aging (wrinkles, fine lines, firmness), skin quality measures (hydration, texture, tone), and biomarkers of skin health. This comprehensive approach provides a complete picture of product effects.
Clinical study results are analyzed using appropriate statistical methods to determine whether observed effects are genuine or could have occurred by chance. We only make claims that are supported by statistically significant evidence from well-designed studies.
Many of our clinical studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences. This publication record reflects our commitment to transparency and contributes to the broader scientific literature on skincare.
Our research program spans multiple areas of skincare science, reflecting the complexity of skin health and the diverse concerns of our customers and professional partners.
Antioxidant Science: We continue to advance understanding of how antioxidants protect skin and to develop new antioxidant formulations. Current research explores novel antioxidant molecules, delivery systems, and combinations.
Aging and Photoaging: Understanding how skin ages—both chronologically and due to environmental factors—guides our development of anti-aging products. We study the molecular mechanisms of aging and identify interventions that can slow or reverse these processes.
Pigmentation: Research into skin pigmentation helps us develop products that address hyperpigmentation, melasma, and uneven skin tone. We study the biology of melanin production and identify ingredients that can safely modulate this process.
Skin Barrier: The skin barrier is essential for skin health, and we research ways to support and strengthen barrier function. This research informs our moisturizers, cleansers, and treatment products.
We are highly selective about the ingredients we use in our products. Every ingredient must meet our standards for efficacy, safety, and quality. Our ingredient research program evaluates potential actives through a rigorous screening process.
Candidate ingredients are first evaluated based on their scientific rationale—is there good theoretical or experimental evidence that they should work? We review the scientific literature and assess the quality of available evidence before investing in further testing.
Promising ingredients undergo in-vitro testing in our laboratories to evaluate their effects on skin cells and their stability in formulation. We study their mechanisms of action, optimal concentrations, and potential interactions with other ingredients.
Ingredients that pass in-vitro screening are then evaluated in clinical studies to confirm their efficacy on human skin. We look for ingredients that deliver meaningful, visible improvements in skin appearance and health.
We also prioritize ingredient safety. All ingredients are evaluated for potential irritation, sensitization, or other adverse effects. We use ingredients with established safety profiles and conduct appropriate safety testing for novel materials.
Quality is paramount in ingredient selection. We source raw materials from reputable suppliers who meet our quality standards. Incoming materials are tested to verify identity and purity before use in production.
Great ingredients are only effective if they can reach their targets in the skin. Formulation science is the art and science of creating products that deliver active ingredients effectively while remaining stable, safe, and pleasant to use.
Our formulation scientists have deep expertise in skin penetration, ingredient stability, and product aesthetics. They work to optimize the delivery of active ingredients while creating formulations that consumers and professionals enjoy using.
We develop proprietary delivery systems that enhance ingredient penetration and stability. These systems may involve specific vehicle compositions, encapsulation technologies, or other approaches tailored to the needs of particular ingredients.
Formulation development also considers product stability. Skincare products must remain effective throughout their shelf life, even when exposed to temperature variations and other environmental factors. We conduct extensive stability testing to ensure our products maintain their quality over time.
Scientific excellence extends to manufacturing. Our products are manufactured under strict quality controls that ensure consistency, purity, and safety. We maintain pharmaceutical-grade standards throughout our production process.
Manufacturing begins with verified raw materials. Every batch of incoming material is tested to confirm identity, purity, and compliance with specifications. Materials that do not meet our standards are rejected.
Production occurs in controlled environments designed to prevent contamination and maintain product integrity. Our facilities are regularly inspected and certified to ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and other quality standards.
In-process testing monitors product quality throughout manufacturing. Finished products undergo comprehensive testing including chemical analysis, microbial testing, and stability verification before release. Every batch must meet our specifications.
We maintain detailed records of all manufacturing activities, allowing us to trace every product back to its component materials and production conditions. This traceability is essential for quality assurance and provides accountability for our products.
